Writer. Photographer. Storyteller.
I’m Olivia Herbert, a sports journalist and visual storyteller studying communication at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Through writing and photography, I tell athlete-centered stories with authenticity, energy and care. Why Sports?
My love for sports comes from my grandfather and great-uncle, Donald and Raymond Herbert. Ray was an All-Star athlete who played for many teams, including the Tigers, White Sox, Athletics, and Phillies. Don loved baseball, and Ray even threw batting practice with the Tigers for years after his career had ended. Don fell sick when I was in middle school, and in my last moments with him, as I said my goodbyes, he asked me to adjust the TV so he could see it. Playing on the hospital TV was a rerun of a Tigers game, and at that moment I knew I wanted to build a career in sports.
Photos of Ray and Don are sourced by the Seattle Times (AP Photo/Phil Sandlin, File), family archives (Facebook), or me; photographers are unknown.
Fun Fact: I've been collecting as many of Ray's baseball cards as I can find. The first one was found with my cousin, Ryan Kryska, a sports editor for AP News.
My Mission Statement
Athletes deserve more than statistics and final scores. I want to document the people, emotions and stories behind sports with respect, authenticity and care.
